Purpose of art therapy groups: to bring individuals with shared life circumstances/intentions together in a therapeutic setting to explore personal awareness, healing and growth. Art experience is not necessary. Imagery created in the group is a non-verbal communication from the inner self to the conscious self. Suggested life experiences: Brain injury of any kind, adults in transition (divorce, retirement, relocation, job related, illness), aging, PTSD, grieving, dream work, spiritual growth, self development and wellness. The power of therapy groups: ‘we are wounded by the collective, we are healed by the community.’ How do art therapy groups work: The art therapist gives the group an ‘art directive’, a simple outline description of imagery each member will complete. Each member will interpret the direction in a personal way using a choice of art materials. During the art making time, members are asked to stay focused on their own creative process in silence. Members are asked to stay with what feelings/thoughts/responses emerge through the process. Following the art making process each member will be invited to share their imagery with personal reflection. With the facilitation of the therapist the group is invited into discussion. Reflection and discussion is centered on the communication of the imagery. Every image is perfect the way it is executed. Art education and artistic technique is not provided or discussed. The art directive for the following week will build on the art and discussion from the previous week. Why use art in therapy: First and foremost, it is a fun approach to therapy. The art directive is designed to by-pass the defense mechanisms that stall the therapeutic progress. Art therapy is a good option when traditional talk therapy is not appealing or has not worked in the past. Using non-verbal communication through creating imagery is a gentler and safer way to approach difficult feelings and personal topics. Visual imagery can communicate complex feelings associated with experiences that are not easily put into words. Limited speech ability due to physical or mental conditions. Creating art in fellowship within a compassionate group builds self acceptance and confidence.
